Successful year in filling Abingdon’s empty shops

Over half of the empty shops in Abingdon were filled this year, thanks to an independent shop project run by Vale of White Horse District Council.

At the start of the project in 2017, the councils set their sights on increasing town centre vitality by reducing the number of empty units and to continue supporting existing independent retailers.

With 14 units being 'empty and available' in the town centre, the council worked with the property owners and local businesses to find match suitable locations for retailers to start trading and resulted in eight vacant units being occupied. One of the units was taken up by Oxford Etsy pop-up shop who have been very popular and attracted new customers into the town.

As part of the project, the council funded a Google My Business pilot for nine existing Abingdon retailers. A Google expert visited each owner to teach them how to market their own shop for free on Google, making them much more visible to potential customers searching online.

Cllr Mike Murray, Cabinet Member at the council said: "The project has been a great success in reducing the empty units and quite literally put nine existing businesses 'on the Google map'. This project is just one of the many activities we do each year to support organisations of all sizes based in our district."

Supporting local businesses to grow is one of the key actions of the council's Business and Innovation Strategy 2017 to 2020. Business owners can find out more on how the council can support their growth by contacting economic.development@southandvale.gov.uk
