PRESS RELEASE - Leisure, health and well-being in the Vale

Vale of White Horse District Council is currently developing a new Health and Wellbeing Strategy for the district. Among other issues, the strategy will identify the district's local health challenges and use of leisure services across the Vale. The council intends to bring a draft strategy to Cabinet in January 2020.

The new strategy will be subject to full public consultation and would be approved by the council's Cabinet. No decisions have yet been made, but councillors have indicated they would like to consider evolving the council's approach to providing leisure services in the district. Where practicable, they would also prefer housing developer contributions for leisure facilities to stay in the communities the houses are being built in, and councillors plan to discuss what options there are to achieve this aim with existing agreements.

Cllr Helen Pighills, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "We want to understand the health inequalities facing our communities and work with them and our partners to reduce these. We want to look at getting a broader section of our residents more physically active across a wider area – not just residents who choose to use leisure centres. This would hopefully get more people active and would also help us with our commitment to addressing the climate emergency."

In the next few months, formal decisions are due to take place around the future of previously announced projects, such as the proposed new leisure centre at Wantage and Grove, which was not included in the council's budget approved by Full Council in February this year as the council has insufficient funding to deliver the centre.
